Sunday At Coney Island

As you can see from the announcement above, I am about to embark on two months of full-on fashion. Before I fall into the super-fab world of high fashion I wanted to take a little trip to a world which it super-fab in it's own little ways - Coney Island.
Coney Island is a world of extremes - the most seedy, the most potential, the most excitement, and the most forgotten.
I bet in twenty years we will look back at these images and barely recognize Coney Island, it will soon be remade much like the recent revitalization of 42nd street. Is that a good thing or bad? I don't know, but every time I go it just becomes more fascinating.
Playa Every emotion is in this little girls face - fear, excitement, pure joy
Coney Island has a seediness that openly rubs elbows with family entertainment - this hotel is in the shadow of the boardwalk amusement rides.
Special events and new sports complexs are some of the first sign of revitalization of the boardwalk
This guy was seriously rocking the boardwalk karaoke
The best $2 taco I have ever eaten from one of the worse looking places I have ever dared to order food from.
Well, I think this sign speaks for itself

Style on the Street....Chinatown NYC

Old Man Style is hard to beat. Gentlemen of a certain generation learned how to wear their clothes not let their clothes wear them.

The Oldest Old School Barber

This is one of my all-time favorite posts
His name is Harry.
He has been cutting hair for 65 years!
The first time I went to his shop I asked "Do you cut with clippers?"
"Yes" he said.
"Do you like to cut with clippers?" I asked.
"No, cutting with clippers is for animals" he replied.
I knew I found my new barber.

I've had my hair cut by several very good barbers in NYC but none have used the little service details like Harry. Harry is all about technique. Just before shaving the back of my neck with a straight blade he wipes the shaving cream off with the handle of the blade so he can really see what he is cutting. He places the talc on a little hand towel before patting it on your neck,
He also hums indescribable tunes while cutting your hair. I don't know if he is the best barber but you don't run across characters like him very often.

Summer On Coney Island Boardwalk

The Fulton Street Fish Market

I use to love shooting early on summer mornings at the Fulton Street Fish Market. There was never an end to the characters that were in and out of that place; salty old-timers, young studs, guys on parole, a toothless old-lady that sold newspapers from a shopping cart - you name it, they were all there. Somehow giant dead fish just couldn't compete with the fish mongers for visual interest.

When I first saw this kid (above) he was sitting just exactly as you see him in the photo. The guys that worked at the market were so use to photographers that they never paid attention to them anymore. Now that the fish market has moved to the Bronx to a state-of-the-art temperature control covered space it just doesn't hold the same gritty appeal as the old spot downtown.

Albanese Meats & Poultry, Nolita, New York

Albanese Meats & Poultry has been in Nolita since it was called the Lower East Side. The butcher in the photo grew up in the neighborhood and his mom ran Albanese until she was 97. This is the real old-school neighborhood butcher not like todays gleaming white medical meat morgues of huge supermarkets. He was telling me how the whole street on Elizabeth use to be little food shops. Across the street was a Greek food shop that customers brought their own jugs to get filled up with olive oil and the same for milk. These leftovers from another era are hard to still find in Manhattan but they are so rewarding when I do.

Merry Christmas!

Young Girls Of Williamsburg Run With The Marathoners

I took this photo while shooting the New York Marathon this year. I've run the NYC Marathon twice so I actually saw the potential of this shot about 8 years ago.

Every year the Marathon makes its way through Williamsburg, a mostly Hasidic neighborhood in Brooklyn. A huge group of young Hasidic girls run back and forth between the runners, giggling and screaming the entire time.

The Marathon is such a great event, it brings together so many different types of people to support the runners. In my opinion it is the best sporting event in the city.
