Day 2 of PFDC Sunsilk Fashion week featured 7 ramp shows with designers Asifa and Nabeel, Nida Azwer, Zara Shahjahan, Sehyr Saigol of Libas, Khadija Shah of Elan, Muse and PIFD Students.



Nida Azwer at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Karachi

Nida Azwer presented her collection titled Auspicious Musings, here the designers musings are on China and on the concentration of the motifs. A primarily white collection anyone that has seen the designers work knows her love for printed motifs. This time she highlighted the elegant crane in black and gold. The models channeled the look of the geisha with small red pouted lips. Color was not lost on the collection and it came in bold strokes within the outfits and lifted the pieces that had long flared dresses and mid length dresses, both done very well and just right.

Asifa & Nabeel's Collection at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Karachi

Asifa & Nabeel's collection was inspired by Romulus and opened with Shahzad Roy and Hadiqa Kiyani as models dressed in silvery grey. Magenta, grey and navy blue was the color palette that made up their collection. Formal dresses in magenta and navy blue were interspersed with casual wear in grey prints. The custom printed fabric was pretty but could have been used better.

Nickie Nina Collection at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Karachi

The Nickie Nina collection took inspiration from the mother of the Ottoman Empire - Kosëm Sultan. It was about feminine ideals, female strength and with that statement opened to a whirling dervish dressed in white in a trance-like state of enlightenment while Persian kalam was played instead of music.

Charity Show at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Karachi
The first day’s finale was a charity show called “Fashion Gives Back” in which the Fashion Week and other designers participated.The charity show was produced by HSY and styled by Asmaa Mumtaz and the theme of the charity show was each designer’s interpretation of ‘Black’ to be highlighted with an accent colour. All proceeds will be channelled towards the rehabilitation of the flood victims of the village of Hisar Qilay in the Malakand district of Swat, which has been adopted by the PFDC.

Sahar Atif of Saai at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Karachi

Sahar Atif of Saai showed her collection The Lattice Lure specifically for the western market. The lattice was the interwoven fabric; used along with chiffons to accentuate the craft. The idea to do something for the international market is a good move by the designer and most of the designs worked well.

Sara Shahid at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Karachi

Sara Shahid of Sublime was one of the most cohesive collections of the evening, Sara Shahid played with three basic colors: white, nude and black. Sublime’s cruise collection was titled La Vie Sublime - The Life Sublime. ‘The collection is a feel of the world’ is what they said at the opening and Sara Shahid did exactly that. With shirts sporting ruffled cuffs and collars there was a bit of France; with the beige fabric belted trousers you could think of a woman in New York making her way to a meeting and a bit of Ola! with a beautiful golden beige shirt embroidered boldly in black motifs. The eastern outfits kept the same vein and it didn’t feel like it was a different collection which is what often happens when a designer wants to show off both eastern and western in one show.

PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week, being held in Karachi, Day 1 was divided into 3 acts, which featured 6 ramp shows with 5 distinct designers Nickie Nina, Sahar Atif, Akif Mahmood, Sara Shahid, Mohsin and a charity show.

Akif Mahmood's Collection at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Karach
Akif Mahmood’s collection Kolors of Kafiristan refers to the traditions found in Kalash. The vibrant thread used to embellish the outfits spoke of the craft indigenous to the area of Kalash with the additional use of pom poms and ribbon. Even the layers of bright beading that is seen on the women of that area was replicated as a bodice. The bright trim on the fabric was highlighted by the black cotton that it was stitched on adding to the affect in the brightness of the colors. Akif successfully created a wave of excitement as a new talent which is what the fashion industry looks for.

Mohsin at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week

Mohsin Ali is a PIFD graduate who hails from Hazara. Mohsin goes into the very emotion of his people to portray them. The models are wrapped in an abaya-esque cover up with mounds of boxes on their heads. In a contrast to these elements at the end of the ramp stood Rizwanullah in a juxtaposing white dhoti and turban. In gradual steps Mohsin moved his collection from black to white to color showing liberation of sorts though one wishes he did so with a little less trepidation. A few stand out pieces included a jacket made of bags and a long army green coat with a backpack stitched on. The best piece perhaps was a bomber jacket that then ballooned out in the floral prints indigineous to Hazara.
