Sadaf Malaterre with her womenswear Prêt-à-porter collection for Spring/Summer 2011 which was inspired from life, nature and color. The collection was a fine blend of silks and structured cuts combined with simplicity and embellishment enhancing the piece.

Ammar Belal's Collection at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week

Ammar Belal presented his Fashion Week collection entitled “The Concrete Jungle”. The collection was menswear and womenswear both inspired by the skyscrapers of New York and Art deco architecture. Different fabrics in multiple shades of grey to symbolize the concrete feel of Manhattan’s skyline were used for the entire collection. For the pieces that incorporated men’s style tailoring techniques, silk blend wools in super high counts were used in pin stripes and checks. New embellishment materials were created by using actual tools used in construction processes such as stainless steel, plastic, bolts, catchers and wire. The $100 silk print in a brick design is a play on the “nations made on money” tagline and was used in accents throughout the collection. Grey distressed denim, along with stretch jersey was also used for the jeans line in the collection.

Omar Farooq Collection at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Karachi

In the first men's collection of PFDC, Omar Farooq of Republic shows clean cut men's fashion inspired by French actor Alain Delon titled Mediterranean Affair. The collection featured the essentially fashion forward man: the dandy. Summer suits in linen and gingham shorts made the suit look fun; they don't need to be just for the office anymore. A trench coat also made its way to the ramp and an appropriately Mediterranean terracotta suit played up the collection. Ascots, white linen pants and a collection sans socks made it a perfect fit for spring /summer. Basics were done well and no longer will men have to resort to trips abroad for those essentials.

YBQ at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Karachi

Aminah Sheikh opened for YBQ in a performance art piece that showed the designer creating his art on the model as his medium; the opening came from the designer's artistic personality. A solemn procession of models followed in a grey and purple palette. In contrast to the last PFDC, YBQ showed a more wearable collection with shirts, dresses and churidars featuring true prêt. The designer even took a conventional route of subtle embroidery and thread work. Sheer voluminous pants were unique with drawstring pant hems for a stylish option to the shalwar.

PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week "DAY 1"

PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week, being held in Karachi, Day 1 was divided into 3 acts, which featured 6 ramp shows with 5 distinct designers Nickie Nina, Sahar Atif, Akif Mahmood, Sara Shahid, Mohsin and a charity show.

Akif Mahmood’s collection Kolors of Kafiristan refers to the traditions found in Kalash. The vibrant thread used to embellish the outfits spoke of the craft indigenous to the area of Kalash with the additional use of pom poms and ribbon. Even the layers of bright beading that is seen on the women of that area was replicated as a bodice. The bright trim on the fabric was highlighted by the black cotton that it was stitched on adding to the affect in the brightness of the colors. Akif successfully created a wave of excitement as a new talent which is what the fashion industry looks for.

Mohsin at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week

Mohsin Ali is a PIFD graduate who hails from Hazara. Mohsin goes into the very emotion of his people to portray them. The models are wrapped in an abaya-esque cover up with mounds of boxes on their heads. In a contrast to these elements at the end of the ramp stood Rizwanullah in a juxtaposing white dhoti and turban. In gradual steps Mohsin moved his collection from black to white to color showing liberation of sorts though one wishes he did so with a little less trepidation. A few stand out pieces included a jacket made of bags and a long army green coat with a backpack stitched on. The best piece perhaps was a bomber jacket that then ballooned out in the floral prints indigineous to Hazara.
